,,,,,In the tropics, thunderstorms frequently occur. They happen when the atmosphere becomes unstable.
,,,,,Thunderstorms are trigged by air rising as a result of converging wind systems. When the northeast trade winds meet the southeast trades, the air at the zone of confrontation must rise.
,,,,,There is nearly always movement of air, but if the incoming energy from the winds exceeds that being transported upward, the temperatures in the lowest layers rise, causing an increase in the temperature difference between the lower and higher levels of the air. If this difference becomes too great, the atmosphere becomes unstable.
,,,,,When the atmosphere is unstable, a volume of air moving upward will do so at an accelerating rate. If a sufficiently large mass of air begins rising, an up draught will result. Because this large mass of air is both moist and unstable, showers and thunderstorms are produced in abundance.
